Growing up in the western state of Colorado, Russell reflects on his own American identity and the distance between himself and the resonance of colonial markers that defined the early fabrication of New York City. From wildfires to gunpowder, acts of surveillance to looming shadows of violence, Trade (At World’s Center) searches the geospatial intersections between the many inhabitants of Governors Island, human or other, translocating across vast distances that inexplicably coalesced artifacts of global commerce within one location. Russell’s work explores disembodiment and placelessness, a taxonometric historiography dissecting the narratives of belonging.
“The Wisconsin glaciation extended from approximately 75,000 to 11,000 years ago, between the Sangamonian Stage and the current interglacial, the Holocene.” Suddenly a new ground is unveiled, existence from the lack. [These soils are derived from glacial material, residual sandstones, shale, limestone, gneisses, schists, and granites.] They vary from clay to loamy sands and some have a high content of rock fragments.(Un)inhabited by humans of another epoch.
